The Controversy

A few words of caution about “Fun” have accompanied positive response to “more fun, less stuff”. For some, fun is irresponsible and some times derived from harmful activities. Describing it as anything producing "an uplifting effect … without causing harm” didn’t deter the negative reactions. We asked for further comments on the More Fun Less Stuff meme.

Some suggested alternatives:

More Joy, Less Stuff”. Or,

"Life” as in “More Life, Less Stuff” is another suggestion. While it effectively encompasses humans and other living things, it has some baggage.

“Living” is like “Life" with more action implied. “Living", like “Fun" is something one participates in. It would, however, add an additional syllable to the meme, breaking up its catchy metre.

"! *** !” is the perfect ‘word’. If only there were a word that represented the potential we humans have for mastering life on this vibrant, life-able planet.

Oh, for a word that represents the best civilization of which humans are capable. We need more of that, and less of the resource exploitation and waste that the Growth ideology profits from.

We have the sensibilities, knowledge, skills, tools and creative ability to live well on Earth for tens of thousands of years. We can capture sunshine and safely integrate with the cycles that have always sustained life. We could fulfill the longing of the universe for a life-form that can appreciate its wonders. Indeed, universal appreciation is embodied in the laughter of children. That laughter should continue for ten thousand generations.

What word would express this effectively?

We need more of it and less stuff.

Life, living, joy, fun. "! *** !” ?

? How would you fill in the needed word?
? Can you add any insights to the reaction to “fun”?

“More ? , Less Stuff”

We received many suggestions.

Ultimately, our aim continues to be recognition that human aspirations will better serve us when they reach for inner growth and satisfaction and where our material interests focus on managing Earth in ways that secure its long term well-being.

A world at peace and in balance with the environment is hard for our minds to grasp, but it is not beyond the capacity of our hearts to experience and to hunger for.
